The other day a baby made direct eye contact with me

and although I was in the middle

of jotting down a twelve-top order across the restaurant

I was transfixed.

baby stared like a glassed lake

and crystallized something in my soul

this was a prodigy self-actualized

far ahead of the top percentile.

he stared

and stared

studying me

learning me

understanding me

judging me

pitying me

and loving me

all unblinking

and then threw up all over himself

without a break in his steely resolve

staring at me as his mother picked him up

staring while taxied away across the restaurant

and staring until only the closed bathroom door

broke

our gaze.

world

I have found the staring contest king

reborn and terrestrial once again

and he has a long successful reign ahead of him.
