This is why the South was such a backwater compared to the industrialized North... They had much less productive labor because slaves were obviously unmotivated, and their economy was debilitatingly based on raw agricultural products shipped domestically or exported elsewhere for refining or further value-adding. Slavery really held the South back, and the benefits of it were hoarded by relatively very few plantation elites.
