The GOP Is A Fascist Outlier In The Western World

There’s an interesting ongoing debate about whether or not the various far-right movements of ethno-nationalism taking root across the globe are necessarily going to some form of a repeat of 1930s fascist history.

While Victory Orban’s Hungary is certainly a fascist success story in which the opposition has no real access to mainstream media or chance of electoral success, new far right governments in Italy and Sweden aren’t as concerning or deserving of apocalyptic fears.

However, America is a different story. Whereas European countries still have strong commitments to privacy, unions, labor rights, strong social safety nets, and diverse parliamentary systems dependent on coalition-building and proportional allotments of legislative power, America does not.

The US also has a rather archaic first-past-the-post electoral system that awards all federal executive power to just one party regardless of the size of its plurality of the vote, which is complicated with wildly undemocratic and disproportional technicalities via the Electoral College that’s…
