If you look at the earliest councils on Christianity in the single-digit centuries, and contrast the relatively bureaucratic decisions they made with many of the interpretations and beliefs of the other early, intellectually diverse groups of Christians from the gnostics to the desert hermits to the tons of groups named after their thought-leaders, one can see that lots of stuff was made up!
