If Kevin McCarthy Was Smart…

McCarthy should make the Freedom Caucus publicly explain why the vast majority of moderate Republicans should negotiate with terrorists.

If aspiring Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy was smart, he’d turn the tables on the #NeverKevin holdouts by decisively speaking for himself and encouraging them to publicly explain what their policy demands are. Because they don’t have any.

They want McCarthy to agree to skip over all his loyalists he can trust to delegate his plans, and who haven’t betrayed his ascension to the minority leader’s traditional prize, and instead give chairperson gavels to Freedom Caucus villains Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, and the other fringiest radicals in the Republican Party.

Their other indirect, non-policy demands regard changing House rules so they can act out whatever bad-faith, toxic, culture war performance art they can think of every morning to block the next two years’ regular order and bureaucracy of the government.

McCarthy should make them publicly outline what they want from him, give himself a break from so much spectacular humiliation, and let them try to craft and communicate a reason for why the vast majority of relatively moderate Republicans…
